In response to the 2024 Policy Address by The Hon John LEE Ka-chiu, GBM, SBS, PDSM, PMSM, the Chief Executive, we are excited to see Physical Education included in the primary school internal assessments starting from the 2026/27 school year, with a weighting equal to that of Visual Arts and Music. This change in policy conveys the importance of children’s and youths’ participation in physical activities to schools, parents, and the public, reflecting also the Education Bureau’s commitment to promoting holistic student development and growth through physical education.
We are dedicated to promoting a habit of regular exercise among children and youths in Hong Kong. In collaboration with our lead advocacy partner, CTFE Social Solutions, the philanthropic arm of Chow Tai Fook Enterprises (CTFE), we have launched the public education campaign “SportsHour”, advocating children and adolescents aged 5-17 to engage in at least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA60) daily, which is in line with the World Health Organisation’s recommendation.
We propose the following recommendations for enhancing sports-related education and public health:
- Implementation and strengthening of the “Whole School Health Programme”
- Integration of physical activities to promote the “4Rs Mental Health Charter” and “Mental Health Literacy Resource Package”
- Encouraging schools to motivate students to achieve “MVPA60”
- Expanding community services for children and youths through physical activities
